Our Story
Justin Mhley has seen firsthand the devastating effects of cancer on a firefighter or police officer’s life and on the lives of the emergency professional’s family. In July 2003, Justin’s father, career firefighter Gabriel Mhley (Muh-LAY), died tragically of his disease at the shockingly young age of 47, leaving behind four sons and his wife Diane.
During the time Gabriel was sick, one of the biggest obstacles the family had to overcome was paying for medical expenses, because their insurance company said the treatment he most needed was too experimental. After the passing of his father, Justin decided that it wasn’t right for families suffering through this experience to have to endure what he and his family did. When someone is sick, Justin believes, he or she should be worrying about getting back to good health, not about finding financial assistance for cancer.
He founded Foundation 58 in 2005, to help firefighters and police officers and their families get financial assistance for cancer and for almost every expense they’re coping with. Foundation 58 (named after Gabriel’s badge number) can help when medical treatments are considered “too experimental,” by providing financial assistance to emergency medical service personnel throughout the United States, who are diagnosed with cancer. Foundation 58 will try to offset costs for treatment, travel, prescriptions, home-care equipment, everyday living expenses and any other costs associated with fighting their disease.
